The 3×6 subway tile is one of the most proven formats in residential tile. It's been used in kitchens and bathrooms for over a century because the proportions just work — the horizontal offset stack creates a visual rhythm that's both classic and inherently adaptable to different styles.
This matte-finish version brings the format into contemporary territory without losing its classic bones. The matte surface works with both warm and cool design palettes, and doesn't date the way some tile trends do.
Installation patterns to consider
- Offset/brick bond: Classic, horizontal — the original subway tile look
- Vertical stack: Modern, elongates the wall height
- Herringbone: Graphic and dynamic, requires more cut pieces but worth it

Pro Tip: Grout joint size dramatically affects the final look. Wider grout joints (3/16") emphasize the grid pattern and read more traditional. Narrow grout joints (1/16" rectified) make the wall look more like a seamless surface. With non-rectified ceramic tile, you'll need at least 1/8" joints to accommodate size variation.
