Schluter® KERDI-BAND 7-1/4" Waterproofing Strip
The mid-width KERDI-BAND — 7-1/4" (184mm) — when the 5" is too narrow and the 10" is overkill. More common on wall panel joints in larger shower builds, on seams where extra coverage gives you added confidence, and in some commercial applications where a wider waterproof strip is specified.
Same KERDI construction throughout: modified polyethylene core with non-woven polypropylene fleece on both sides. Bonds into thin-set mortar. Waterproof once embedded. Required 2" minimum overlap per side.
When to choose 7-1/4" over 5"
- Wall panel joints in large format tile installations where wider coverage is preferred
- Seams that span areas of substrate movement where extra bridging width helps
- Outside corners where the wider format lays flatter than the 5"
- Projects where the spec calls for a wider band (some waterproofing specs require it)
- Commercial applications
Where to use 5" instead
For most residential shower builds — inside corners, drain transitions, standard butt joints between KERDI sections, and floor-wall transitions — the 5" band is the standard choice and is perfectly adequate. The 7-1/4" is the upgrade when you want more margin or coverage.
Specs
- Width: 7-1/4" (184mm)
- Construction: Modified polyethylene core with fleece on both sides
- Available roll lengths: 16'4" (5m) and 32'8" (10m)
- Minimum overlap at seams: 2" per side
Pro tips
- Same installation method as 5" KERDI-BAND — notched trowel, press into fresh mortar, embed fully.
- The wider format is easier to handle on flat joints but slightly trickier in tight inside corners. For corners, the 5" often works better.
- Cut strips to length before you start mortaring — don't try to cut while the mortar is open.
- Always embed while mortar is fresh and workable. KERDI-BAND needs full contact with the mortar to be waterproof — a partial or dry bond is not waterproof.
Pairs with: KERDI, KERDI-BOARD, DITRA, DITRA-HEAT — wherever membrane surfaces meet and need waterproof sealing.
