Why KERDI-BOARD for a bench?

The traditional approach to shower benches — blocking between studs, cement board over top, waterproofed and tiled — works, but it requires careful waterproofing detail on a complex three-dimensional surface. Miss a corner, cut the membrane too tight, or let the cement board absorb too much water over time, and you have a mold problem buried inside the bench.

KERDI-BOARD is itself waterproof. Tile bonds directly to it. The only waterproofing work is sealing the joints where the bench meets the wall and floor assembly — which is the same KERDI-BAND process you're already doing everywhere else in the shower. No extra learning curve.

Weight and installation

KERDI-BOARD is lightweight — a fraction of cement board. The bench can be set and fastened without heavy lifting or structural framing modifications in most cases. Fasteners use KERDI-BOARD-ZT washers to prevent the screw heads from pulling through the foam core.

Pro Tip

Slope the bench surface slightly toward the shower interior — roughly 1/8" per foot — before tiling. A perfectly flat bench holds standing water and leaves a puddle every time you shower. A tiny slope drains it. Set your tile with a slight slope built in, or adjust the mortar bed under the bench surface. Small effort, much better result.
