The KERDI-DRAIN ABS horizontal outlet drain body — no corner seals included. Built for Western Canada where ABS is the standard drain pipe, and the horizontal outlet configuration handles slab-on-grade and basement shower installations where vertical drain access isn't possible.

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) pipe is the black drainage pipe you'll find in most pre-1990s homes across BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, and it's still widely used in new construction west of Ontario. Matching your drain body material to your drain line material keeps the connection simple — ABS to ABS with ABS cement, no adapters, no compatibility questions.

When horizontal outlet is the right call

Horizontal outlet drains exist because not every shower can drain straight down. In a basement slab situation, the drain line was cast into the concrete — it runs horizontally and you connect to it from the side. The drain body is installed level in the shower floor; the 2" outlet connects to the horizontal drain line running through the slab.

Why no corners/seals

This version is for experienced tile installers and contractors who already stock KERDI-BAND and have their own method for corner waterproofing. If you're doing a single shower and want everything in one kit, look at the "WITH CORNERS/SEALS" version. If you're running multiple jobs or prefer custom-cut KERDI-BAND for corners, this is the cleaner option.

The KERDI-DRAIN difference

Standard drains rely on a rubber gasket or caulk to seal the membrane at the drain — both are single points of failure that age and eventually allow water through. KERDI-DRAIN's fleece-covered bonding flange creates a mortar-bonded connection between the drain and your waterproofing membrane. Same mechanical bond as every other inch of your KERDI system. That's why Schluter can warrant the complete shower system for 10 years — every connection is bonded, not caulked.

Technical specs

  • Body material: ABS (connects to ABS drain lines with ABS solvent cement)
  • Outlet: 2" horizontal
  • Bonding flange: Fleece-covered, bonds to thin-set mortar
  • Compatible with: KERDI, KERDI-SHOWER trays, DITRA shower floor assemblies
  • Grate: Not included — all 4" KERDI-DRAIN grate kits are compatible

Pro tips

  • Confirm ABS vs. PVC before ordering: ABS is black, PVC is white or grey. Using an ABS body on a PVC line without a proper transition fitting can cause joint failure — match materials
  • Position the outlet direction permanently before mortaring: The horizontal outlet can't be rotated once the drain is set. Check that it points toward your drain line rough-in before committing
  • Set drain height carefully: Add tile thickness + mortar bed thickness to determine where the drain collar sits. Getting this wrong means a drain grate that sits proud of or below your finished tile surface
