Schluter®-KERDI-LINE - Linear Drain - SQUARE- Grate Kit
The SQUARE grate is for showers where the drain is a design element, not just a utility. Open squares, clean geometry, and a pattern that works with both contemporary tile and classic subway builds.
Product Overview
The Schluter KERDI-LINE SQUARE Grate Kit is the visible cover assembly for a KERDI-LINE linear drain channel body. It features an open square pattern in stainless steel, installs over the full length of the drain channel, and creates a graphic geometric element that reads as intentional design rather than infrastructure. The SQUARE grate is also available with a locking screw for commercial applications where drain security is a code or maintenance requirement. Available in brushed stainless and other finishes. Grate reveal is approximately 3/8" above tile surface for the standard assembly.
What Makes Linear Drain Worth It
Point drains force four-sided floor slopes — every tile needs angle cuts where it approaches the drain, large-format tile becomes a layout nightmare, and the visual center of the floor has a round metal disc interrupting whatever tile pattern you've chosen. Linear drains eliminate all of that:
- Single-plane slope means no diagonal tile cuts — tiles run straight and trim cleanly at the drain wall
- Large-format tile (24"×48", 12"×24") installs without piecing around a center drain
- The drain channel is a horizontal line that can align with grout lines for a visually resolved layout
- Curbless shower designs (barrier-free) are significantly easier to achieve with linear drain placement at the wall
Choosing Your Grate Style
- SQUARE (this kit): Open square pattern — works with contemporary tile, geometric designs, and almost any bathroom style. Also available with locking screw for commercial use.
- SOLID: Solid stainless bar — minimal, industrial, modern. Less texture than SQUARE.
- STYLE grates (CURVE, FLORAL, PURE): Decorative minimal-reveal options — designed for design-forward showers where the grate is part of the aesthetic.
- TILE grate: Completely invisible — tile directly over the drain line. No visible grate at all.
Installation Notes
- The grate kit installs onto the KERDI-LINE channel body — the channel body must be already set, plumbed, and waterproofed.
- Standard grate assemblies accommodate tile thickness from 1/8" to 1" (3–25mm).
- The grate length must match the channel body length — order the grate kit in the same length as the channel body. Do not mix lengths.
- The grate is removable for cleaning and maintenance — no tools required. The open SQUARE pattern is typically easier to clean than solid grates because debris passes through rather than accumulating on the surface.
- For the locking screw variant: a tamper-resistant screw and matching driver are required for removal. Keep the driver accessible for future maintenance access.
Pro Tips
- Align the drain channel so the grate is parallel to a grout line — even 1–2° of rotation is visible over the length of a 48"+ drain, and it reads as an installation error rather than a design choice.
- The SQUARE pattern grate is one of the more versatile Schluter options — the geometric grid works in contemporary, transitional, and even some more traditional tile applications. When in doubt about grate pattern, SQUARE is the safe choice.
- Order the grate finish to match shower fixtures (towel bars, faucet, hardware) before tile selection is finalized, not after. It's easier to adjust tile or fixture choices early than to re-order a grate in a discontinued finish at the end of a project.
- For large walk-in showers where the linear drain runs the full width, the SQUARE grate has less visual weight than a solid bar — better for showers where the focus is on the tile, not the drain.
What It Pairs With
- KERDI-LINE channel body — must be ordered and installed separately
- KERDI-SHOWER-LT or KERDI-SHOWER-LTS — pre-sloped shower trays for linear drains
- KERDI membrane — waterproofing that bonds to the KERDI-LINE collar
- KERDI-BAND — for surrounding waterproofing seams
