The right trowel for the right membrane — this is more important than it sounds. Every Schluter membrane has a specific notch size engineered to deliver the exact mortar volume it needs for full coverage. Use the wrong trowel and you risk voids under the membrane: uncoupling failures, waterproofing gaps, and tile cracks that are frustrating to diagnose after the fact.

Schluter makes three purpose-built trowels, each matched to a specific membrane:

• DITRA-TROWEL — 11/64" × 11/64" square-notch. Bonds DITRA to the substrate. The compact notch applies just enough mortar so the fleece embeds completely without squeeze-through into the membrane cavities.
• KERDI-TROWEL — 1/8" × 1/8" square-notch. Bonds KERDI and KERDI-BAND to walls and floors. (A 1/4" × 3/16" V-notched trowel also works if you don't have the KERDI-TROWEL.)
• DITRA-XL / DITRA-HEAT TROWEL — matched to the deeper cavities of DITRA-XL and DITRA-HEAT membranes, which need more mortar to fill the larger stud channels properly.

Why square-notch?

Standard tile trowels are V-notched. Schluter membranes need square-notch geometry — the vertical walls of each notch produce ridges of consistent height that flatten to even, gap-free coverage when the membrane is pressed in. V-notch trowels leave inconsistent coverage and tend to push mortar away from the membrane rather than into it.

Pro Tip

After pressing the membrane, do a pull test on a small corner section before committing to the full floor. Peel back the edge — the fleece should tear before it lifts cleanly. If it peels without resistance, your mortar was too dry or too thin. Fix that before you tile, not after.
