What’s in a DITRA-HEAT heated floor kit
- Uncoupling membrane — standard DITRA-HEAT, DUO (a thermal break for cold basements and slabs), or peel-and-stick for the easiest install.
- Heating cable — sized to your heated floor area at 240V. The cable can’t be cut, so we size it to the open floor (not under the vanity, tub or toilet).
- Thermostat — basic, programmable touchscreen, or WiFi smart; each ships with two floor sensors and a built-in GFCI.

Heated floor kit — frequently asked questions
How do I know what size heating cable I need?
Measure the open floor you’ll walk on — not the area under the vanity, tub, or toilet. The builder sizes the cable to that heated area. DITRA-HEAT cable can’t be cut, so it’s always sized to fit the open space.
Do I need special electrical work for a heated floor?
Yes — a DITRA-HEAT system runs on a dedicated GFCI circuit. The thermostat has the GFCI built in, and a licensed electrician should make the connection.
What’s the difference between DITRA-HEAT, DUO and peel-and-stick?
DUO adds a thermal break so heat rises into your floor instead of a cold basement or slab. Peel-and-stick skips the thinset underneath for the fastest install. Standard is the classic thinset-set membrane.
Can I install a heated floor in a bathroom?
Yes for the bathroom floor. Shower waterproofing is a separate Schluter KERDI system.

DITRA-HEAT cable size chart
DITRA-HEAT-E-HK heating cable can't be cut, so you pick the size that covers your heated area without going over. Your heated area is the open floor you walk on, not the space under the vanity, toilet or tub. 240V is the standard for most heated floors; 120V suits small floors or a room with only a 120V circuit.

Size your own floorHow to size a DITRA-HEAT heated floor
- Measure the whole floor. Length times width, in feet.
- Take out what doesn't get heat. Subtract the vanity, toilet, tub and shower base. What's left is your heated area.
- Pick the cable. The largest cable that covers no more than your heated area. It can't be cut, so never go over.
- Cover the whole floor with membrane. The membrane goes wall to wall under the tile, plus about 10% for cuts. Use DITRA-HEAT-DUO over a cold basement, crawlspace, slab or garage.
- Choose the thermostat. Every DITRA-HEAT thermostat includes two floor sensors and the GFCI. The system needs a dedicated circuit, connected by a licensed electrician.
