- Heavy-gauge steel construction keeps the notch profile accurate under the pressure of large-format tile and stone — no blade deflection that would starve the mortar bed.
- Available in multiple notch sizes to match mortar coverage requirements for large-format tile and stone, ensuring full adhesion on heavy slabs that demand 95%+ back coverage.
- Three trowel sizes cover the range from standard field tile through oversized porcelain slabs — select the notch that matches the tile size and mortar manufacturer's specification.

Description
The trowel you use determines the coverage you get, and coverage determines whether your tile installation holds up or fails over time. Under-troweled tile — where mortar doesn't fully support the tile back — is the #1 cause of tiles cracking in service.
Custom Building Products' premium notch trowels are precision-ground for consistent notch depth and spacing. The quality steel holds its edge through repeated cleaning rather than dulling and deforming over a job.
Trowel size basics
- 1/4" × 3/8" V-notch: small tile, mosaics, wall tile
- 3/8" × 3/8" square notch: 4"–16" floor tile (most common residential)
- 1/2" × 1/2" square notch: 12"×24" and larger format tile
- 3/4" square notch: very large format (24"×24" and up) — often combined with back-buttering
Pro Tip: For large format tile (anything 18"+ in either dimension), use the next trowel size up from what you think you need. The mortar collapses about 50% when tile is pressed into it. The TCNA standard for wall installations is 80% coverage; floors should be 95%.
Clean your trowel while the mortar is still wet — hardened thinset on a trowel destroys the notch profile.
