Description
Description
This is the workhorse combination: an ABS drain body with a 2" outlet and a Classic 4" stainless steel grate kit. If you're building a standard tile shower with conventional ABS/PVC drain plumbing and want a clean, professional stainless grate finish, this is the configuration most tile contractors reach for.
What's included
- KERDI-DRAIN ABS body: Drain housing with 2" ABS outlet for solvent-cement connection to ABS drain pipe. Large fleece-covered bonding flange bonds directly to KERDI waterproofing membrane using unmodified thin-set mortar
- Classic 4" stainless steel grate kit: Square grate assembly in brushed stainless finish, with adjustable frame for tile thickness and lateral positioning
How the KERDI-DRAIN waterproofing works
Traditional shower drains use a clamping ring that compresses a membrane — a system that depends on proper clamping torque and rubber that stays pliable over decades. The KERDI-DRAIN's bonding flange is covered in polypropylene fleece. You press the KERDI membrane into mortar on that flange — it physically bonds, just like tile bonds to cement board. There's no ring, no gasket, no clamp to fail.
Installation sequence
- Rough-in drain pipe at correct elevation — ABS body sets on top, fleece flange at tile assembly height
- Solvent-cement body to 2" ABS drain stub
- Set KERDI-SHOWER tray or mortar bed around drain body
- Apply thin-set to fleece bonding flange and KERDI waterproofing membrane simultaneously — overlap 2"
- Install grate kit to finished tile height — frame adjusts to tile thickness
Pro Tips
- Set the drain body lower than you think — you have the height adjustment collar and frame assembly to bring the grate up to tile level. A drain set too high cannot be fixed without tearing up tile
- Apply KERDI-FIX (not mortar) around the outer edge where the membrane meets any non-fleece surface on the drain — KERDI-FIX creates a flexible seal that moves with the assembly
- The Classic stainless grate has a small ~1/8" reveal above tile — this is intentional and normal. It's not flush; it slightly protrudes to aid water flow into the drain
- If you're using a KERDI-SHOWER-T foam tray, the drain body installs before the tray — not after. The tray is cut to fit around the drain body
