Description
If you're pulling out a bathtub and converting to a walk-in shower, the 38" × 60" KERDI-SHOWER-KIT was built for exactly this situation. This footprint matches a standard bathtub alcove almost perfectly, which means no major structural changes, no framing headaches — just a clean conversion to a properly waterproofed tiled shower.
The kit includes the pre-sloped KERDI-SHOWER-T foam tray (no mortar bed required), KERDI waterproofing membrane for your walls, KERDI-BAND waterproofing strips for seams and corners, and the hardware to put it all together. The only thing you order separately is the drain — your choice of finish, style, and material.
Why this beats a traditional mortar bed
Old-school shower construction means mixing and floating a sloped mortar bed, waiting for it to cure, then waterproofing over it — two or three extra days before you can even start tiling. The KERDI-SHOWER tray goes down in mortar in minutes, it's already sloped to the center drain, and you're tiling the same day. The entire assembly is backed by Schluter's 10-year warranty as a complete system.
What it pairs with
- Drain: Choose any KERDI-DRAIN body (ABS or stainless, 2" or 3" outlet) + your preferred grate finish — Classic, Contour, Trendline, or Tile (invisible)
- Wall substrate: KERDI-BOARD panels instead of cement board — lighter, fully waterproof, tile the same day
- Niche: KERDI-BOARD-SN prefab shower niche — no custom building required
- Mortar: Schluter SET (unmodified) or ALL-SET (modified for wood subfloors)
Pro Tips
- The tray can be trimmed with a utility knife if your alcove is slightly off from the standard 38" × 60" — but work carefully and test-fit before cutting
- Overlap the KERDI membrane 2" minimum at every seam, and always use KERDI-BAND at the floor-to-wall transition — that joint is the #1 leak point in DIY showers
- Order your drain before you start — you need to know the drain body height to set the tray at the right elevation
- Use unmodified mortar (Schluter SET) to tile over the tray — modified mortars can interfere with adhesion to the membrane surface
Schluter designed this system to be the last shower waterproofing you ever have to think about. Unlike traditional felt paper + cement board assemblies (which are damp, not waterproof), KERDI creates a sealed envelope where water simply cannot get behind your tile. No mold, no rot, no failed grout joints from substrate movement.
