Description
A 72" × 72" shower isn't a bathroom feature — it's a statement. At 6 feet square, this is a genuinely spa-grade shower footprint, and the waterproofing system behind it needs to be built to match. The KERDI-SHOWER-KIT 72" × 72" gives you every component for a sealed, warranty-backed, professional-quality shower assembly — sized for a build that's going to impress.
The pre-sloped EPS foam tray replaces a traditional mortar bed, cutting days off the schedule. Set it, seal it, tile it the same day. Everything in the kit is engineered to work together as a system — no mixing third-party waterproofing products and hoping for the best.
What's Included
- KERDI-SHOWER-T tray (72" × 72") — Pre-sloped expanded polystyrene base with integrated KERDI waterproofing on the surface. Center drain position.
- KERDI-BOARD-SC shower curb — Pre-built waterproof foam curb that integrates cleanly with the tray perimeter
- KERDI membrane — For wall waterproofing — bonds via fleece into thin-set mortar
- KERDI-BAND strips — Seals all joints and floor/wall transitions throughout the assembly
- KERDI-KERECK pre-formed corners — Inside and outside corner pieces, no folding required
- KERDI-SEAL pipe and valve seals — Waterproofs showerhead arm and mixing valve penetrations
Drain sold separately — the KERDI-DRAIN system offers 4" and 6" grates in multiple finishes. For a shower this size, consider the 6" grate for improved drainage capacity.
Building a 6-Foot Shower Correctly
Larger shower floors have more movement potential — more square footage means more cumulative substrate expansion and contraction. The KERDI system handles this: the sealed, bonded membrane accommodates limited crack-bridging, and the pre-sloped tray's EPS foam has inherent flexibility. The Schluter Shower System warranty covers you for 10 years, which matters more on a high-end build than a basic one.
For a 72" × 72" shower, pay extra attention to:
- Drain positioning — The center drain needs to align with your rough-in. Measure twice before ordering and before setting the tray.
- Tile selection — A four-way sloped floor at this size is compatible with 12" × 12" or smaller tiles without excessive cuts. If you want large-format tile (24" × 48" or bigger), consider the linear drain tray option (KERDI-SHOWER-LT) instead.
- KERDI-BAND at transitions — A 72" × 72" shower has a lot of linear footage at floor/wall transitions. Budget enough KERDI-BAND to do every junction properly.
Installation Notes
- Bond tray with Schluter ALL-SET (wood subfloor) or SET (concrete) — for a tray this large, use a trowel and work in sections to maintain open time
- KERDI walls: apply thin-set with KERDI-TROWEL (1/8" × 1/8" square-notch), overlap seams 2" minimum
- KERDI-BAND at every floor/wall corner — 2" overlap onto each face
- Tile over KERDI with SET, ALL-SET, or FAST-SET — achieve 95%+ mortar coverage under large-format tiles
- Caulk all changes of plane with silicone — no grout at inside corners or floor/wall joints
Pro Tips
- Multiple body sprays? Plan waterproofing carefully. Each body spray arm is a pipe penetration that needs a KERDI-SEAL-PS. Order extra pipe seals if your shower has multiple spray outlets.
- Niche planning on a large shower. A 72" × 72" shower usually has room for multiple niches. If you're adding KERDI-BOARD-SN prefab niches, position them between studs during framing — don't try to cut them in after.
- Heated floor in this shower? DITRA-HEAT fits beautifully in a large walk-in. The 72" × 72" footprint (minus toilet and vanity clearances) is almost ideal for a full floor heating circuit — see the DITRA-HEAT system for a heated shower floor that integrates with this tray.
